8:00 AM — Meet @ Ventura Harbor + The Call to Adventure
We'll rendezvous in Ventura Harbor outside of the Island Packers offices at 8AM. You'll be treated to a light breakfast (coffee, fruit, bagels) while your MSA Team reviews the day's agenda. You'll have a chance to meet the rest of your fellow adventurers, and we'll begin our Journey together with an intention setting exercise.
9:00 AM — Ferry to the Channel Islands
We'll begin our journey to Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park aboard a ferry operated by Island Packers that departs from Ventura Harbor at approximately 9AM. On our 1-hour journey to Santa Cruz Island, we'll cross the marine-rich Santa Barbara Channel as the captain and crew keep a sharp lookout for wildlife, including Humpback, California Gray, Blue, Minke, Finback, and other whale species! It is a common occurrence to find yourself among mega-pods of dolphins, as well.
10:30 AM — Sea Cave Kayaking Adventure
Upon arrival at Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands Outfitters’ guides will show you to base camp, where picnic tables, storage lockers, and kayaking equipment for the day are located. You will be issued a wetsuit that is sized to fit (so be honest with heights and weights), along with helmet and PFD (Personal Flotation Device) prior to beginning our kayaking adventure. Wetsuits are necessary for staying warm as well as for protection from the rocks and hard-bodied sea creatures living on them. All Caves and Coves adventures explore the sea caves within the Scorpion Marine Reserve. Once we're geared up and ready to go, you'l hit the water for adventure! We'll explore the nooks and crannies of the sea caves that surround Scorpion Anchorage. Your CIO guides are trained as naturalists and will make sure that your island adventures includes information about island wildlife, kelp forest ecology, marine and intertidal species, natural history, and cultural history.
1:00 PM — Lunch + The World's Hardest Question
After our kayaking adventure, we'll dine on a delicious meal provided by Channel Island Outfitters. Feel free to bring your own food if you have specific dietary preferences and/or requirements. Over lunch, we'll take the opportunity to discuss our kayaking experience and answer the world's most difficult question ... You'll have to be there to find out what it is!.
2:00 PM — Guided Hike + Your Strategic Plan
We'll head out for an afternoon hike along the beautiful coast of Santa Cruz Island, stopping at a scenic overlook with sweeping views of the ocean and the California Coast. Your MSA Program Leaders will lead a powerful group discussion and personal reflection activities designed to help you create clarity around where you are now in your life. We'll also use the kayaking adventure and the fact that we are on an island far from the mainland to introduce a discussion about disconnecting from the things that tie us down in our lives and then explore what actions you can take to stay connected with yourself.
4:00 PM — Depart Channel Islands NP for Ventura Harbor
We'll hop back aboard the ferry for a beautiful late-afternoon ride across the Channel. If were lucky, we'll get another opportunity to experience the incredible marine life that calls the Pacific Ocean home while we bathe in the warmth of the afternoon sun.
5:00 PM — Arrive Back in Ventura Harbor
You'll bid adieu to your new friends and your guides from MSA and CIO before heading home re-energized, invigorated, and inspired!

Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find answers to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions about this Disconnect to Reconnect Kayaking Adventure. If you have any additional questions, simply contact us!
WHERE ARE WE GOING TO MEET?
We'll meet at 8AM in front of the Island Packers offices in Ventura Harbor. From there, we'll take a 1-hour ferry ride to Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park.
HOW LONG ARE THE DIFFERENT ADVENTURES?
Including instruction, safety tips, getting geared up, and time kayaking around the caves and coves of Santa Cruz, your kayaking adventure will last about 3 hours.
The hiking that we will do is optional, and can range from 30-minutes to over an hour.
IS THIS PROGRAM DANGEROUS?
If you do not take unnecessary risks while kayaking or snorkeling, this program is extremely safe. Your guides from CIO are trained in First Aid and CPR, so in the unlikely event that something goes awry, you can rest assured you'll be in good hands!
ARE THERE SHARKS?
Sharks do live in the ocean and occasionally they are spotted in Southern California. We have never seen one in our area and thus have never had an incident. In fact, seeing a shark would be really cool! Due to the size of our group and our proximity to the sea cliffs and kelp beds, we would be in very little risk of a dangerous encounter. Sharks are wonderful creatures that play a crucial role in the ecosystem of the Ocean.
DO I NEED TO BE IN AMAZING SHAPE TO PARTICIPATE?
Not at all! You do need to have a certain level of fitness—you need to be able to carry your gear and backpack to the campsite approximately .5-mile away, kayak for up to 3 hours, and snorkel for an hour or so—but you do not need to be a world-class triathlete to participate in this program!
WHO ELSE IS GOING WITH ME ON THIS PROGRAM?
Muddy Shoe Adventures' clients tend to be 25—45 years old, although we have had participants ranging in age from 18 to 72 attend our programs! Group sizes tend to be about 6—8 people. In addition to your fellow adventurers, 2 MSA Team Members will accompany you on this program.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
We'll send out a detailed packing list in the weeks leading up to the kayaking adventure, but some of the most basic items you would want to bring include: Swimsuit, towels, sunscreen, hiking shoes, and a few changes of clothes. Again, more info will be provided leading up to the program.
WHAT KIND OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES ARE WE GOING TO DO?
Like most Muddy Shoe Adventures, this Kayaking Adventure consists of a mix of group conversations and personal reflection exercises such as journaling. On ALL of our programs, we do our best to create a safe and supportive environment for you to really dive into your work and your process of self-exploration and self-discovery.
WHO IS LEADING THIS PROGRAM?
This Adventure will be led by MSA Founder & Chief Adventure Officer Michael Bennett, Ed.D.
