TESTIMONIALS

I participated in the MSA Hiking Adventure in Santa Monica. They chose a great location, provided easy directions, and even had coffee and snacks, which is the best way to start off an early morning adventure! They had a well prepared itinerary, and the staff were very friendly. We met in a small group, had time for discussions and reflections, and enjoyed a beautiful hike in between our sessions. I really enjoyed my adventure! Thanks again MSA!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below you will find answers to come of the more frequently asked questions about our Halloween Hiking Retreat!

WHERE & WHEN ARE WE GOING TO MEET?

We'll rendezvous at the parking lot at Will Rogers State Park at 8:00AM. In addition to a rare polo field, renown ranch house, and a lawn that begs to be picnicked on, Will Rogers State Historic Park has plenty to offer to hikers. This is the eastern end of the 65-mile long Backbone Trail, which crosses the Santa Monica Mountains all the way to Point Mugu. Will Rogers SHP is also home to Inspiration Point, a popular overlook offering sweeping ocean vistas.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

Take Sunset Boulevard to Will Rogers State Park Road, located 4.5 miles west of the 405 and three miles east of PCH. At the light, turn north on Will Rogers State Park Road. Drive 3/4 of a mile up the mountainside to the park entrance. Pull past the gate and park in the lot on the left. Parking is $12.

HOW LONG IS THE HIKE?

The loop to Inspiration Point is 2.25 miles long with 325 feet of elevation gain. The gradual hike delivers far reaching views from Santa Monica Bay to downtown LA.

IS THIS HIKE DANGEROUS?

Other than the usual suspects — sprained ankles, blisters, etc. — this hike is very safe. Some wildlife will be present (ex: birds, lizards). Although unlikely, it is possible that we will encounter more dangerous creatures such as rattlesnakes or mountain lions. MSA staff members trained in Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder techniques will be on the hike in the unlikely event that something should occur.

DO I NEED TO BE IN AMAZING SHAPE TO PARTICIPATE?

No! You should be able to hike for 1-hour or so on an easy/moderate grade trail, but you do not need to be marathon- or Tough Mudder-ready to participate in this program!

WHO ELSE IS GOING WITH ME ON THIS HIKE?

Most of our programs have 6—8 participants, although group sizes do vary. Generally speaking, there is usually a 50/50 mix of males and females ranging from 21—50 years old on our programs. In addition to your fellow participants, you'll be joined by 2 MSA staff members who will help lead your program.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

This is a low-maintenance program: You need to bring hiking shoes, water for yourself, snacks, and any other personal items (ex: sunscreen, etc.) and that's about it. We'll send out an email with a more detailed gear list closer to the program date that will factor in weather and other considerations.

WHAT KIND OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES ARE WE GOING TO DO?

Like most Muddy Shoe Adventures, this Hiking Adventure consists of a mix of facilitated group conversations and personal reflection activities such as journaling. You'll also be given opportunities to share your stories, insights, and lessons from your experiences with your new friends. On ALL of our programs, we do our best to create a safe and supportive environment for you to really dive into your work and your process of self-exploration and -discovery.

WHO IS LEADING THIS PROGRAM?

Michael Bennett will be your Program Leaders for this Adventure.
