Program Introduction

Thailand is one of the most diverse, exotic, and exhilarating countries on earth. A trip there almost guarantees that you will experience some degree of sensory-overload. As the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized, Thailand remains a well-preserved, culturally rich, and vibrant land of warm, happy people. (It is often referred to as 'The Land of Smiles.') Modern travel infrastructure and plush accommodations allow you to experience it all: Bustling metropolises, majestic mountains, wondrous wildlife, mouth-watering cuisine, isolated beaches, and sleepy river valleys. The result? Countless opportunities for cultural and personal exploration and discovery! As we discover Thailand, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of Thailand
  • Experience the night markets in Bangkok and Chiang Mai
  • Get up close and personal with a herd of elephants
  • Challenge yourself with an introduction to rock-climbing class
  • Chill out on the pristine beaches in the south of Thailand
  • Spend time meditating and doing yoga at a retreat center
  • Travel with a small group of fun and like-minded individuals
  • Engage in inspirational conversations and discussions about life
  • Go on a guided journey of personal exploration and discovery
  • Create a strategic action plan for transforming your life

Along the way, you'll be supported by MSA's Founder and Chief Adventure Officer, Michael Bennett, Ed.D., in your journey of self-exploration, discovery, and transformation. Throughout the program, Michael will use the trip's many adventures and experiences as catalysts for lively and inspirational group discussions and conversations — usually held in the afternoon or evenings — that will help you reflect on what you are learning from your adventures. Time for personal reflection will leave you feeling rejuvenated, re-energized, and reconnected with yourself. And working one-on-one with Michael will empower you to create a vision of the life that you want to be living and develop a strategic action plan for kick-starting the next chapter in your life and making that vision a reality. Whether you are looking to ring more passion, purpose, and meaning to your life (and to your work), earn about new cultures and perspectives, or simply take time to reconnect with yourself, his trip is for you!

Accommodations

ENGHOLM HUSKY LODGE

Our home base for most of the trip will be the Engholm Husky Lodge, truly a unique and one-of-a-kind lodge. The log houses here at the lodge were built by Sven Engholm himself and have a special charm. Sven has made all the interior furnishing and decoration in order to create a unique and personal atmosphere in each house. The wood heated sauna is cozy and has separate room for relaxing. The outdoor hot tub is very popular. The ‘Barta' is a special turf covered log house where we gather around the open fire sitting on reindeer furs with special food and good drinks. Engholm Husky Lodge has 40—50 highly trained sled dogs for long-distance racing, expeditions, and tours.

RAVNASTUA MOUNTAIN CABIN

One evening, you will spend in a cozy Ravnastua Mountain Cabin, an old lodging station for the priests, doctors, mailmen, and other officials traveling across the Finnmark plateau between the different towns and settlements. We'll also spend an evening camping out under the Northern Lights and sleeping in a snow pit that we dig — talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to some of the more frequently asked questions about this Thailand: Discovering the Land of Smiles Adventure. If you have questions that are not answered here, please contact us!

IS THIS PROGRAM FOR ME?

This program is for you if you love traveling, exploring new cultures, making new friends, and pushing your comfort zones, AND if you are ready to create something exciting and new in your life — a job or career or even a new company, a new relationship, and/or new perspectives and new ways of looking at things.

DO I NEED TO BE IN GREAT SHAPE TO PARTICIPATE?

You do not need to be a world-class athlete to participate in this program. You should, however, be fit enough to walk/hike for 4—6 hours at a time, occasionally on steep or slippery terrain. If you have questions or concerns about your ability to complete this program, please contact MSA at (424) 216—8339.

WHAT KIND OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WORK ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE?

The personal development aspect of this program includes group discussions, personal reflection activities, and the opportunity to work one-on-one with your MSA Program Leader. As noted in the itinerary above, some days will have slightly longer and more intense group discussions and workshops while other days have optional meetings with Michael.

The ultimate goal of our work together is to use the many experiences, lessons, and insights from your time in Norway to reshape your perspectives of self, others, and the world. Narrative storytelling in a supportive group environment is a powerful way to help people open up to who and where they are in their lives AND what they want to create in the next chapter of their lives. Some of the questions and conversations we may explore on this adventure include:

  1. What called you to this adventure? Why are you here?
  2. Where you are in your journey though life? What's your story?
  3. What do you want? What is the next chapter you are creating in your life?
  4. What could stop you from getting or having that? (Hint: Fears and Limiting Beliefs!)
  5. How will you make that vision a reality? What actions are you committed to taking?

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE GOING WITH ME ON THIS ADVENTURE?

This trip is designed to be an intimate and life-changing experience. As such, we are limiting the group size for this Adventure to a max of 8 participants. (We also require a minimum of 4 people for this trip.) Most participants for this program are between the ages of 25—45, but we've had adventurers as young as 65 on our programs. Generally, we see a few more women than men on our programs.

WHO WILL BE LEADING THIS PROGRAM?

Your Program Leader for this Adventure will be Michael Bennett. You can see a brief bio of Michael above.

WHY DO I HAVE TO APPLY FOR THIS PROGRAM?

We ask that all prospective Muddy Shoe Adventurers submit an application prior to participating in an MSA Expedition for a few reasons. First, the process of submitting an application — and answering the questions on the application — begins the process of reflection and introspection that is so critical to our programs! Secondly, having an opportunity to interact with you before the program gives both you and MSA a chance to make sure that your participation on a Muddy Shoe Expedition is the right fit for both of us.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS LIKE?

The application process is pretty simple:

  1. Submit the application online.
  2. A MSA rep will contact you within 72 hours to review your application and make sure we have the info we need.
  3. Chat with a MSA Program Leader to discuss your application and make sure that this is a good fit for both parties.
  4. If things go as expected, we'll send you an invoice requesting an initial deposit for your Adventure!

Please note: Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance to a Muddy Shoe Expedition!

WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE IN NORWAY IN THE SPRING?

COLD! (We are in Norway, after all!) Highs are typically in the mid- to low-30s during the day, and temperatures can drop into the 0s (or below) at night. Get ready to bundle up!

UMMM ... SO WHY ARE WE GOING TO NORWAY IF IT'S SO COLD THAT TIME OF YEAR?

Simple: It's the best time of year to see the Northern Lights. (Plus, it's hard to go dogsledding when there's no snow :)

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

The best approach is to bring layers of clothing: Everything from shorts and t-shirts to jackets, sweaters, and gloves. We strongly encourage you to purchase trekking poles for this adventure, as we’ve found them to be incredibly valuable on day hikes, particularly when exploring unfamiliar terrain. A broken-in pair of hiking boots with excellent tread is critical. A detailed packing list will be sent out via email about 90 days prior to the program date.

WHICH AIRPORT SHOULD I FLY INTO?

Alta, Norway (ALF) is the airport that we will be supplying transports to/from.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE QUESTIONS THAT ARE NOT ADDRESSED HERE?

Simple — CONTACT US! We're always happy to talk to you about any additional questions, concerns, or ideas you have about your program.
